If you’ve ever had the joy of attending an osteopathy appointment, you will be aware of the long list of benefits you get as a result of the treatment. Over the course of several appointments, you can be relieved of the pain you have had to live with for years. However, we’re sure you have also ‘felt’ the after effects of the treatment.

One question we frequently get asked by some patients is “Why do I feel worse after osteopathy?” and we can understand why this might be concerning. After all, you’ve spent all this time living with the pain to begin with, you don’t want to make it worse. We want to stress that it is common for there to be some soreness a day or two after treatment. It should begin to clear after 48 hours.

Common Reasons for Feeling ‘Worse’ After Osteopathy

Like we mentioned previously, it is more common than you think to feel ‘worse’ after your osteopathy treatment. Think of it as if you went for a run after not running for weeks, the day after, you’re likely to feel the effects of the muscles stretching. Below are some reasons you might be feeling it after your osteopathy treatment.

Post-Treatment Soreness

Muscle soreness is one of the most common feelings after treatment. This is because the muscles and joints are responding to being mobilised in new ways. Naturally, this will cause soreness, but it will subside as long as you follow your osteopath’s guidance.

Increased Blood Flow and Inflammation

The osteopathic treatment can stimulate increased circulation, causing you to have that ‘heavy’ feeling in your muscles and joints. It can also heighten the feeling of sensitivity. Inflammation is a natural response by your body to treated areas, as the body sends nutrients and healing cells.

Your Body is Adapting

Your nervous system and musculoskeletal system need time to adjust after treatment. If you’ve spent an extended period living with tension in a specific area, it is natural to feel sore as you rediscover the range of movement.

How to Ease Post-Treatment Symptoms

Your osteopath will provide you with the appropriate information after your treatment, but there are some general ‘rule of thumb’ things you can do to help the post-treatment symptoms.

Hydration

It is important to hydrate well after treatment. It helps flush the byproducts of treatment and supports recovery.

Gentle Movement

Light walking and stretches will be recommended by your osteopath, so be sure to follow their guidance as this will aid recovery. It is important not to ‘over-do’ it as your body adapts.

Rest

And of course, rest plays a vital role in restoring balance after your osteopathy treatment. Good sleep is vital for tissue repair and nervous system regulation.
